Cloud computing: Hybrid cloud gaining in popularity

Today, companies around the world are favouring the model of a hybrid cloud over pure private or public clouds. Yet, many managers have only a vague understanding of the advantages of a hybrid cloud.

The question about a strategy for moving to the cloud is also often futile. These were the findings of a survey conducted by consulting company Avanade, for which the analysts at Wakefield Research surveyed 1,000 C-level executives, department heads and IT decision-makers in 21 countries around the world in October 2014.

The survey found that 58% of the companies surveyed had not yet formulated a hybrid cloud strategy; 69% did, however, plan to do so in the coming year. This indicates that interest in hybrid clouds is growing considerably faster than interest in private or public clouds.

One of the reasons for this is obviously that the majority of those responsible (74%) are convinced that solutions based on a hybrid cloud will help increase their company’s competitiveness. At the same time, however, only 16% of those surveyed were able to name all of the advantages of a hybrid cloud: the option of integrating private and public clouds, moving workloads to the relevant cloud, distributing workloads to several public clouds and scaling them as required.
