Internet Exchange: Istanbul gets its own network node

The DE-CIX plans to open three more nodes in countries around the Mediterranean, one of them in the Turkish capital of Istanbul, in the third quarter of 2015.

Just a few weeks ago the company that operates the world’s largest Internet exchange node under the same name, DE-CIX, in Frankfurt am Main, announced new peering points in Palermo and Marseilles, the point of arrival for many sub-sea communications cables from Mediterranean countries and especially from North Africa. In Sicily, DE-CIX works together with TI Sparkle, a subsidiary of Telecom Italia, while in Marseilles the company cooperates with the data centre operator Interxion. Those sites are now to be joined by an additional node in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul.

There too DE-CIX wants to first use the infrastructure of another company. Later the capacities are to be redistributed among multiple data centres in the city. Istanbul is a location of interest, as several terrestrial lines and sub-sea cables for communications with countries of the Middle East converge there. In addition, according to DE-CIX, Turkey is a huge and growing market: while there are more than 470 ISPs, currently only 46% of the Turkish population have Internet access.

The DE-CIX Management GmbH, which operates the Frankfurt node, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Verbands der deutschen Internetwirtschaft e.V. (eco) (Association of the German Internet Industry e.V. (eco)). The DE-CIX International AG, another eco subsidiary, looks after international business. It currently maintains Internet nodes in Dubai and New York. (Source: DE-CIX/rf)
