Cloud database: Oracle supports Raspberry Pi Weather Stations for Schools

The Oracle Academy program and the British Raspberry Pi Foundation have launched the joint project Oracle Raspberry Pi Weather Stations for Schools.

A total of 1,000 schools will receive a hardware kit, consisting of a Raspberry Pi and an add-on board for measuring various weather values. This will enable pupils to ascertain wind strength and direction, precipitation rate and relative humidity, air pressure and quality, as well as ground and air temperature.

In the project, pupils will learn how to build a weather station and to program an application to record all data. The results will be fed into a cloud database hosted by Oracle, from which they can be called using SQL commands that the pupils will develop together with the Oracle Academy. In parallel to this, a website is to be set up at each school on which the local weather conditions will be published. Participants in the project will be able to blog about their experiences and interact with other schools via a microsite.

The project is aimed at pupils aged 11 to 16 and is open to all schools worldwide. More information and a registration form can be found on the website of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, whose goal it is to advance the education of children and young people in the field of computer science. 500 of the 1,000 hardware kits will go to Oracle Academy member institutes; the remaining 500 will be distributed freely.
