Platform as a service (PaaS) currently ranks as only the third-most important issue in the context of private clouds. That should change, however, within the next couple of years.
According to a study commissioned by Oracle to IDG Connect, most companies (36 percent) opt now for hybrid cloud solutions, followed by- (32 percent) private and public cloud services (17 percent). The most persuasive argument for the private cloud, according to the companies, is the short lead time. The managers surveyed, however, did express some concerns. Data security, integration with existing applications, the required know-how and the hardware costs are seen as the major problems.
In the survey, 68 percent of respondents cited Software as a Service (SaaS) as the most important operation area for private clouds, followed by Database as a Service (DaaS) at 61 percent, and Platform as a Service (57 percent). This rating order, however, is expected to shift by 2017. At that time, DaaS is still expected to be in the lead, say 29 percent of managers, while PaaS should be in 2nd place (26 percent) and SaaS (23 percent) in third.
The study is based on a survey of 300 executives in Germany, Great Britain, Russia, France, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. (Source: Oracle/rf)
