Retail trade turnover down by 1.3 percent

According to the Federal Statistical Office, turnover generated in the German retail trade fell by 1.2% and 1.3% in nominal and real terms respectively in January 2009 as compared to January last year. Particularly hit were internet trade and mail order business where turnover dropped by 7.5% (nominally) and 8.2% (really). As compared to December 2008, the German retail trade turnover decreased by 0.5% and 0.6% respectively.

With regard to retail trade in foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods the respective annual changes in January this year were -1.2% and -2.4%.

Turnover generated in the non-food sector also fell by – 0.7% (nominally) and –0.6% (really) in January 2008. The only exception was the retail trade in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and medicinal products where turnover grew nominally by 1.2% (-0.9% in real terms). For the retail trade with furniture, household appliances and construction materials the respective changes were + 01% (really) and –0.3% (nominally). GERMAN
