In Hesse the purchasing power is highest in Germany

According to a study of the Acxiom marketing company the entire purchasing power volume for Germany in 2007 will presumably amount to 1.522 trillion Euros. This is an increase by almost 30 billion Euros or by 2% as compared to last year. Thus, each German citizen in 2007 has on average 18.468 Euros at their disposal. Purchasing power is highest in Hesse followed by Bavaria. In Berlin, on the contrary, purchasing power fell by 1.7 billion Euros. Among large cities Munic with a purchasing power of 26.648 Euros on a per capita basis is the undisputed front-runner.

In the Old Federal States purchasing power grew more than in East Germany and increased by 30.6 billion Euros. On a per capita basis purchasing power in the Old Federal States amounted to 19.378 Euros and is 4.9% above the German average. Absolute purchasing power in the New Federal States is stagnating and is just 0.4% above that registered in 2006.

Besides Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg purchasing power is above average in Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland- Palatinate. The city state of Hamburg, however, which back in 2005 ranked in first and in 2006 in second place is currently in fourth position. Purchasing power in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia is below average and amounts to less than 80 index points.

With regard to large cities with more than 500.000 inhabitants purchasing power is highest in Munich (26.648 Euros per inhabitant) followed by Frankfurt upon Main (21.786 Euros), Dusseldorf (21.646 Euros) and Stuttgart (20.361 Euros). Large cities where purchasing power is relatively low are Hamburg (19.886 Euros), Cologne (20.239 Euros) or the German capital Berlin (16.719 Euros).
