The German government has presented a new bill which is to strengthen the position of rights owners in the fight against product piracy. Among other things the bill contains a procedure regulating dissuasions after copyright infringements. Furthermore the German copyright laws, confiscation procedures and other regulations are to be adapted to EU legislation.
The upper house of German parliament supports the bill and in addition stresses the importance of the protection of intellectual property to the German economy and labor market. With regard to some regulations, however, the upper house expressed its concern that objectives may not be reached and the protection of right holders not improved. In this context the upper house of German parliament also said that the bill does not give any answer as to what extent the new bill complies with data protection regulations at the national and European level.
