The president of the tourism commission of the lower house of German parliament, Mrs. Marlene Mortler, thinks that globalisation provides both challenges and opportunities to the medium-sized hotel business in Germany. “The quicker and better SMEs adapt to special cultural features, the bigger will be the share of the gains that can be made in this business”, said Mrs. Mortler in an interview with the weekly magazine “Das Parlament“.
According to her, hotel proprietors have to know what guests with a different cultural background are looking for. Furthermore, Mrs. Mortler said that she was in favour of adjusting the VAT rate in the hotel business to that in neighbouring countries which means that it should be reduced.
